KRISTEN CHIU

Kristen An-Li Chiu is a New York-based Asian-American interdisciplinary artist and designer focusing on textiles and wearables.  She grew up in San Diego, CA then graduated from NYU Gallatin in 2018 with a concentration in The Intersection of Fashion, Bodies, and Nature. 

As part of a diaspora, sentimentality towards objects has been integral to her practice. The ritualistic process of holding onto something tangible to connect to the intangible feels familial. She is interested in belonging—the action, the memory, the ritual, and the ‘thingliness’ of it all. She has a deep reverence for nature and things and collecting things in nature. Through collecting, she seeks to understand how the relationships between humans, objects, and nature cultivate a sense of belonging. 

Kristen’s current project, Thingamajig Objects, is an homage to objects and an exploration of the spaces they hold. It includes jewelry and art objects using clay, beadwork, and metal. Kristen's other work can be found on Instagram @kristenchiu & @thingamajig_objects.
